ChatGPT, an AI-powered chat tool, is fast making waves and continues to be embraced by many people globally. It has become one of the most widely used AI tools in various disciplines and platforms.

Academic publishing is one arena where ChatGPT is making an influence and many wonder how ChatGPT will change academic publishing. No doubt, the new hot tool has the potential to transform or even revolutionize the scholarly publishing fraternity.

How ChatGPT will change academic publishing

Before we continue further, let’s understand more about ChatGPT; what it is and how it can be used.

Later, we will cover ChatGPT from the context of academic publishing.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot created by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization and technology corporation. Technology entrepreneur Elon Musk was one of OpenAI’s pioneering board members.

OpenAI was established in late December 2015 with the goal of so-called “developing and promoting friendly and beneficial AI that can benefit humanity.”

In easy terms, using ChatGPT, we can “chat” with the computer and ask it to produce an array of text and content. As an AI tool, ChatGPT is trained on a huge dataset of text and code, and can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.

ChatGPT can also follow your instructions and address detailed needs in your prompts. For instance, if you ask ChatGPT to write a poem about a cat, it will generate a poem that is both creative and informative about cats. ChatGPT is never a finished product; it still continues being developed and upgraded, but it has the potential to be a powerful tool for communication and creativity.

Technically, ChatGPT stands for “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer.” It is based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture, and ChatGPT-4 which was released in March 2023 was the latest version.

ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text data from the internet and is designed to generate human-like responses in natural language. It can understand and generate text in a conversational manner, making it well-suited for chat-based interactions. It has been trained on a diverse range of topics and can provide information, answer questions, engage in discussions, and offer suggestions, among other tasks.

On the one hand, millions have been delighted in discovering ChatGPT, as it helps them to save time, be more productive, more creative, and more connected. It has also provided them with a sense of wonder and excitement about the possibilities of artificial intelligence. In fact, we previously covered the interesting topic of whether AI can write academic papers.

On the other hand, some others are less enthusiastic and expressed concern about its downsides. For instance, irresponsible people can use the tool to generate harmful content, as well as create fake news or propaganda.

ChatGPT can be used for learning, writing, customer service, education, entertainment, and more. It is also constantly being improved, making it even more useful and versatile.

What is Academic Publishing?

Those outside of academic publishing will ask: What is academic publishing?

Academic publishing involves the publication and dissemination of research findings to the academic community and the public. It is a vital part of the scientific process, as it allows researchers to share their work with others, get feedback, and build on the work of others.

Albert Einstein’s article, Kinetic Theory of Thermal Equilibrium and of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which was published in the Annalen der Physik journal, is an example of an academic publication.

Academic publishing is also referred to as scholarly publishing, with the two used interchangeably.

There are many different types of academic publishing. But the main forms are academic or scholarly journals, books, and conference proceedings. Typically, a valid academic publication undergoes rigorous research, data collection and finding, writing and peer reviews.

Journals are the most common type of academic publication, and they typically publish articles that are peer-reviewed, meaning that they have been evaluated by other experts in the field. We previously discussed the pertinent question: How many academic journals are there in the world?

Books are also a common type of academic publication, and they typically contain more in-depth research than journal articles. Conference proceedings are published after conferences, and they typically contain the papers that were presented at the conference.

How ChatGPT Will Change Academic Publishing

ChatGPT will change academic publishing by helping researchers in a number of ways.

Outlining Ideas

First, ChatGPT can help researchers to generate ideas and write papers, find and cite sources, and communicate their findings. This will mostly benefit those who find it to put their perspectives and context into writing. ChatGPT is capable of writing a journal manuscript outline easily in just a few seconds, with the right input and prompting.

ChatGPT can assist in formulating ideas and writing papers by providing them with a platform to brainstorm, outline, and draft their work. It can even write a presentation speech, if a researcher is finding themselves having to present their work to a large audience.

Improving Quality

ChatGPT is also capable of improving the quality of academic writing. It can clean up the language, introduce more solid vocabulary, and enhance the writing style. ChatGPT can also make suggestions on grammar and punctuation. Not everything may be 100% correct or usable, but users can take the suggestions and make consideration.

ChatGPT also has the capability to detect scholarly plagiarism, though this is a feature that needs enhancing and continued fine tuning. The challenge with plagiarism checking is that not all content in the digital world is made accessible without paywall or subscription fees.

Citations

Citations are a way of giving credit to the authors of the work used in publication, and is a must in academic publishing. When citing a source, important information such as author’s name, work title, date and publishers need to be included. ChatGPT will make the citation job easier by extracting and providing the relevant information to the scholar.

Other Areas that Can Benefit from ChatGPT

Other than academic publishing, here are some specific examples of how ChatGPT is being used in other industries.

  • Customer service: ChatGPT can be used to answer customer questions and provide support.
  • Education: ChatGPT can be used to create personalized learning experiences for students.
  • Entertainment: ChatGPT can be used to create stories, poems, and other creative content.
  • Research: ChatGPT can be used to research topics and generate reports.

Conclusion

Overall, ChatGPT is a powerful tool and we will continue to see how ChatGPT will change academic publishing in the years to come. It is to be noted that with the newer version of the ChatGPT software, more advanced features will be released, which can transform our work even more revolutionarily. Hence, other than academic publishing, more and more changes in the way of work will be noticed in other areas and professions as well.
